Ten Traits of Lightworkers

“Pointing to another world will never stop vice among us; shedding light over this world can alone help us.” Walt Whitman

Lightworkers are a force of light in what sometimes seems like a dark world. We feel different from other people. Different doesn’t mean superior mind you; just…different. Think you might be a lightworker? Read on for ten common traits of lightworkers.

1. Sense of purpose. A lightworker’s sacred purpose is to serve as a healer; of the planet and of all sentient creatures, including each other. We know our purpose is greater than ourselves, and we feel drawn to help resolve the world’s broad social and environmental issues.

2. Discernment. Lightworkers endeavor to answer the call of Source (light) over the call of the ego (fear), and they have learned to discern the difference. As we realize our calling and mature as lightworkers, we master the art of discernment.

3. Energy and connection. Lightworkers understand energy and the power of connection. In some ways, separation is a construct of the ego. We know everything is energy, everything is connected, and every action has an impact on the world – no matter how small or seemingly insignificant the action. As the late, great Howard Zinn said, “You can’t be neutral on a moving train.”

4. Comfortable alone. Lightworkers are comfortable alone and in fact are often drawn to solitary situations. This can make us feel like outsiders, initially – because in some ways, we are. Over time, we welcome and embrace our alone time – in part because we know we are never truly alone. We are connected to everything and everyone around us. (Which can be overwhelming, at times, and leads me to the next trait.)

5. Sensitive to others’ emotions. Lightworkers are deeply empathetic, and feeling the energy of others is as natural as breathing to us. It can be difficult to be in crowds or around negative energies for very long, as we feel depleted – we need alone time to rest, replenish, and rebuild our energy.

6. Power of thought. Lightworkers are aware of the power of thoughts. Thoughts are energy, and as the saying goes, energy flows where attention goes. Thoughts become actions which become experiences. As Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

7. Spiritual beings. We know we are spiritual beings having a human experience, not the other way around. The body is a temporary vessel, while the soul is eternal. It will transform, but it is not lost. That is the nature of energy and of consciousness. We often have a sense that we are “old souls” – an inner knowledge that we’ve walked the Earth many times, on many paths.

8. A bit of a rebel. We can be a bit (sometimes more than a bit) rebellious, as typical structures of authority don’t resonate with us. We have a strong natural resistance to placing value on material wealth, power, or hierarchy.

9. Mystical experiences. Many lightworkers have had spiritual, mystical, or “beyond the mundane” experiences that give us knowledge that there is more to the Earth walk than what many perceive, and that bring us to a higher level of consciousness.

10. Compelled to help others. A lightworker’s natural instinct is to help others – without any expectation of gaining something in return, and we often have careers that allow us to do so. Many lightworkers are teachers, counselors, nurses, coaches, or any number of professionals that allow them to help others on a routine basis.
